Researchers at Monash University in Australia have developed a device that can help blind and visually impaired people. Scientists have developed a frame into which the Gennaris bionic vision system is embedded, as well as a device that can replace eyes.

It is the first device with a chip to treat blindness. The custom-made headgear includes a wireless transmitter camera and vision processing software. A set of 9x9mm chips is implanted into the brain.

The researchers explained that visual impairment is one of the diseases that can progress to complete blindness if left untreated. At the same time, the probability that therapy will not help is about 20%. Moreover, their technology can increase the effectiveness of treatment by 2.5 times.

A camera connected to the device will record everything that happens around. The camera then sends the image to the visual processor, where other parts of the technology extract data from it that can be translated into chips.

The data is then fed into a complex circuit in each of the implants that will be placed in the human brain and converted into an electrical impulse circuit that stimulates the brain using microelectrodes. Thus, a person regains the ability to see.

Many clinically blind people have optic nerve damage. They prevent the transmission of signals from the retina to the “visual center” of the brain. The Gennaris bionic vision system can bypass this damage, allowing the treatment of many conditions that are currently limited in treatment, the scientists note.
