On October 8, the Nobel Committee announced the name of the 2024 Nobel Prize laureate in Physics. According to the decision of the committee, American, Princeton University professor John J.Hopfield and Canadian, University of Toronto professor Geoffrey E.Hinton were awarded the high scientific award “For fundamental discoveries and inventions enabling machine learning using artificial neural networks.”
The committee’s statement notes that J.Hopfield created a structure capable of storing and reconstructing information. E.Hinton invented a method that allows independent discovery of data properties and is becoming important for large neural networks currently in use.
The Nobel Prize laureate in Chemistry will be announced on October 9, and the Nobel Prize laureate in Literature on October 10. The names of the Nobel Peace Prize laureates will be announced on October 11, and finally on October 14.
It should be noted that the award ceremony will take place on December 10 in the capitals of Sweden and Norway, on Alfred Nobel’s birthday.
