Russian scientists have developed a recipe for biodegradable plastic, which will allow replacing films and bags with more environmentally friendly products, RIA Novosti reports.
Information on the achievements of scientists from Vyatka State University (VyatSU) and N.N.Semenov Institute of Chemical Physics has been published in the journal Polymers. The publication indicates that the new material is based on polylactic acid.
According to scientists, this is the most promising biopolymer, the creation of which uses components isolated from plant biomass. After that, they are mixed, and the result is an entirely plant-based product, which is then decomposed in a compost pit.
“Biodegradable material is much better and easier to be recycled than classic plastic, because it uses renewable plant raw materials “, – emphasized Andrei Burkov, Associate Professor of the Department of Chemistry and Polymer Processing Technology at VyatSU.
