On May 23, 2023, at Academician A.Guliyev the Institute of Chemistry of Additives (ICA) of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan there was held an event on the topic “Expansion of cooperation in promising areas of chemical science” with the participation of heads of faculties and departments of public universities specializing in chemistry and chemical engineering.
The event was attended by representatives of Baku State University, Baku Engineering University, Azerbaijan State University of Oil and Industry, Azerbaijan Medical University, Azerbaijan State Pedagogical University, Sumgayit State University and Azerbaijan Technical University.
Vagif Farzaliyev, Director General of the Institute, opening the event with an introductory speech, said that the main purpose of holding such meeting was to further expand existing ties in priority areas of chemistry and chemical engineering, conduct joint fundamental and applied scientific research, strengthen the integration of science and education, pedagogical activities, joint scientific leadership, exchange of experience, organization of joint scientific seminars and mutual discussion of issues of cooperation in other areas, determination of a roadmap for the near future.
V. Farzaliyev, who gave information about the activities, scientific achievements and international cooperation of the scientific institution headed by him, noted that so far, using the possibilities of fine organic synthesis and computer modeling of highly effective physiologically active compounds together with BSU, ATU, BMU the results of detailed studies carried out in the direction of the targeted synthesis of medicinal substances, organic reagents for various purposes and composite materials and the study of the mechanism of functional action, were published in prestigious journals of the world. He stressed that there was a basic department of BSU at the Institute of Chemistry of Additives where students and graduates had scientific and production practice and were engaged in research work in laboratories. He noted that at the next stage, together with the AMU, it was planned to conduct joint research on extracts of medicinal plants, which would be collected from the vegetation cover of the economic regions of Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur liberated from occupation.
According to the academician, chemistry students and masters from different universities, individually and in groups, practiced in the ICA laboratories equipped with modern instruments, performed the practical part of their diploma and term papers, participated in joint research of the ICA and the Faculty of Chemistry of the BSU. He said that a plan for holding joint scientific seminars within the framework of cooperation for the 2023-2024 academic year was approved, starting from September of this year, scientific seminars would be organized with the participation of leading scientists in a mutual form.
He said that he believes that such measures could make a great contribution to Azerbaijani science.
Later, Academician Abel Maharramov, head of the Department of Organic Chemistry at Baku State University, spoke about the relevance of this meeting, about ways to further develop scientific schools existing in our country, as well as about the obvious problems of training personnel, creating joint research centers, equipping laboratories with modern equipment and reagents, and voiced his proposals for their solution.
Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry of Baku State University, Doctor of Philosophy in Chemistry, Assoc.Prof. Fuad Karimli spoke about the connections of the university with the ICA, promising areas of chemical science and priority tasks for the future.
Eldar Garayev, head of the Department of General and Toxicological Chemistry of the Azerbaijan Medical University, spoke about the research work carried out at the university and their success in the field of drug development and biochemistry using computer technologies in carrying out these works, and drew attention to the possibility of joint cooperation in these areas.
Professor Sevinj Hajiyeva, head of the Department of Ecological Chemistry, BSU, spoke about the creation of the department, areas of application, the impact of chemical processes on living organisms in the environment, as well as joint research that can be carried out to eliminate these problems.
Taking part in the event, the head of the department “Petrochemistry and chemical technology” of BSU, Doctor of Chemical Sciences, prof. Ibrahim Mammadov, Head of the Department of High Molecular Compounds, MD, prof. Rasim Alosmanov, Head of the Department of Analytical Chemistry, Doctor of Technical Sciences, prof. Famil Chiragov and Professor Namig Shikhaliyev, Executive Director of the ICA, Associate Professor Afsun Sujayev, Heads of the Laboratory – Professor Hagigat Javadova and Associate Professor Elmira Nagieva spoke about the importance of relationships, ways to expand cooperation.
