For the first time, students who completed a scientific project at Academician Ali Guliyev Institute of Chemistry of Additives of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan won a medal at the International Science and Engineering Fair in the USA. Thus, at the Fair held in California on May 11-17, students of the X class of the World School of Khazar Said Aslanov and Ibrahim Allahverdiyev were awarded bronze medal in the nomination “Biomedicine and health sciences”.
Under the scientific guidance of Professor Afsun Sujayev, executive director of the Institute of Chemistry of Additives, in the laboratory “Physiologically Active Organic Compounds” scientific research on the topic “Creation of a new generation of enzyme-isoenzyme inhibitors against Alzheimer’s disease” was conducted. This project qualified for the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), as it won the 1st place – the gold medal at the 13th Republican Competition “Tomorrow’s Scientists”.
For your information, ISEF – International Science and Engineering Fair is  competition of scientific and research projects, organized in the USA and visited by representatives of various countries for more than 70 years. The International Science and Engineering Fair considered the world’s largest global scientific competition for high school students, presents hundreds of projects from more than 75 countries in 21 different STEM disciplines.
In 2011, the Republic of Azerbaijan joined ISEF in order to encourage schoolchildren studying in IX-XI classes of general education institutions operating in the country to scientific research, as well as to stimulate their scientific and creative activities. Since 2012, our country has held the republican competition “Tomorrow’s Scientists”, which is a selection round at ISEF to identify talented schoolchildren who are inclined to scientific research and who have achieved high results in scientific research. In the specified competition, their research works are evaluated mainly in 8 directions (mathematics, physics and astronomy, chemistry, biology, medicine and health care, ecology and nature management, engineering, computer science). Pupils-winners of the competition represent our country at the Fair in the USA.
It should also be noted that until this year, Azerbaijani schoolchildren, who performed at ISEF, did not win medals. Having won bronze medal this year, we signed the first medal for our country.
