The powerful WannaCry ransomware, which attacked computers around the world in 2017, in 2019 became the most dangerous weapon of cybercriminals. This is reported by PreciseSecurity.

Last year, the virus took first place among all ransomware, being the most common in the world. Almost a quarter of all online extortion (23.5 percent) are connected with WannaCry. The malicious program encrypts the files on the victim’s device and requires a ransom for the key to decrypt.

The main source of infection for victims (over 67 percent of cases) was spam mailings and phishing emails. Among the risk factors there were weak passwords and a lack of knowledge in the field of cybersecurity. Less often, infection occurred through advertising and dangerous sites, lenta.ru reports.
