Azerbaijani science faced a heavy loss

Azerbaijani science has suffered a heavy loss. Head of the laboratory of “Fine organic synthesis” of Academician A. Guliyev Institute of Chemistry of Additives of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan (ANAS), Doctor Sciences in Chemistry, Professor, famous scientist in the field of organic chemistry Sabir Ahmed oglu Mammadov died at the age of 84.

Sabir Mammadov was born on June 10, 1937 in the city of Ganja in the family of an office employee. He graduated from high school in 1956 and entered the chemistry department of the Azerbaijan State University (ASU) in the same year. During his fourth year studies at this university, at the invitation of academician V.F.Negreev, he was hired as a laboratory assistant in the corrosion laboratory of the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR. After successful  graduating from university in 1961, he was transferred to the position of engineer in the same laboratory. In 1964 he entered graduate school at the Department of Organic Chemistry at ASU and graduated from it in 1967. Since 1967 he has worked at the Institute of Chemistry of Additives of ANAS. After defending his thesis in 1975, he worked as a senior researcher at this institute, and then as head of the analytical chemistry laboratory. In 1991 he defended his doctoral dissertation, in 1993 he was appointed professor at the Higher Navigation  School, and in 1994 as the director of a joint Azerbaijani-German enterprise. From 2003 to the present, he continued his activity at the Institute of Chemistry of Additives of ANAS. Initially, he was the head of the laboratory “Scientific bases for the use of additives, lubricating oils, lubricants and special fluids”, and since 2018, the laboratory “Fine organic synthesis”.

Over the years, his laboratories have got significant achievements in the development of scientific foundations for the creation and application of important industrial lubricants, the synthesis of physiologically active substances.

The main direction of scientific activity of Professor Sabir Mammadov is the synthesis of functionally substituted alkylaryl sulfonamides by various methods and their study as additives to oils. He studied the reaction of N-halogen sulfonamides with unsaturated hydrocarbons and polymers, showed that this is a new method for obtaining sulfonamides. Among the substances obtained, there  were high-quality multifunctional additives which were  recommended for use. It was found that the reaction of N-halogen sulfonamides with unsaturated hydrocarbons in the presence of alcohols and phenols was a new method for obtaining β-chlorophylls.

Systematic study of the reaction between alkylarylsulfochlorides and polyamines made it possible to find new conditions for the preparation of mono- and disulfamides, and these studies contributed to the synthesis of new derivatives of mono- and disulfonamides. Taking into account that the obtained sulfonamides of N-alkyl and quaternary ammonium salts have a very high antibacterial and anticorrosive effect on metals, new methods for preparing disulfamides were developed. These methods were based on the reactions of N-alkylation and oxidation of iodine N-alkylsulfonamides.

In addition, S.A. Mamedov for the first time developed  new methods of heterocyclization of functionally substituted sulfonamides and polyaminsulfamides and obtained heterosulfonamides of various compositions. The properties of the synthesized N-substituted sulfonamides and their heterocyclic derivatives as additives to lubricants and special fluids were studied. It was found that these substances were biologically active ones  and could be used both as bactericidal agents (against staphylococcus, intestinal fungi, microbes-penicillium), and as antimicrobial additives.

Another direction of the professor’s scientific activity was the development of a method for obtaining organic phosphorus based on unsaturated hydrocarbons and polymer compounds. The relationship between the structure of a number of organic phosphorus compounds obtained in this way and their effect as a lubricant additive was studied, and it was established that they were new highly effective multifunctional additives.

One of the directions of Mammadov’s  scientific activity  was associated with the scientific foundations of the use of additives, lubricating oils, greases and special fluids. Based on the research carried out in this direction, new high quality greases were obtained for sealing and protecting pipe threads. Since they were based on very cheap raw materials and were more effective than industrial lubricants, they were recommended for use.

Sabir Mammadov was the author of over 200 scientific papers, including 32 author  certificates and patents. More than 100 of his works were published abroad. 50 scientific papers were published in journals indexed in reputable international databases.

6 doctors of philosophy were trained under the guidance of Professor Sabir Mammadov.

His scientific activity was highly appreciated by our state in different years. In 2016, he was awarded the Progress Medal, as well as the Gold Medal «The Best Patriot Researcher-Scientist », in 2017 – the diploma “Scientist of the Year”, and in 2019 – the Certificate of Honor of the Department of Chemical Sciences of the Presidium of ANAS.

The memory of Sabir Ahmad oglu Mamedov, a famous chemist, scientist and favorite of the team, will always live in the hearts of those who know him.

Allah rehmet elesin!
